Report: Sony prepares for $3 billion IPO

PlayStation 3 maker to float shares in its insurance division, raising cash for ailing games arm. Electronics giant Sony is set to sell 725,000 shares in an initial public offering of its insurance unit, Tokyo-based Sony Financial Holdings, reports Bloomberg. The deal is likely to be Japan's biggest IPO this year, and trading will start on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on October 11. The stock is expected to raise approximately 332 billion yen ($2.86 billion) for the electronics manufacturer. Analysts believe that the funds are likely to be siphoned to the consumer electronics and games divisions of the corporation, to make more Bravia TVs and to offset the losses being incurred by the PlayStation unit--and it may also be a sign that a further PS3 price cut will soon on the cards. Mitsuhiro Osawa, analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities, said, "Sony could use the funds for various options to strengthen its electronics and game businesses. A cut in the price of the PlayStation 3 is one option." Osawa rates Sony "outperform," meaning that he thinks Sony shares will do better in the near future than the market overall. Link...

Sony readying PS3, PSP video download service?

In January 2006, Sony announced that it was revamping its Connect download service to digitally distribute movies and television shows to PlayStation Portables. That didn't happen. The proposed March launch date slid by, and the subsequent months saw Sony reference PSP video downloads only when related to the PlayStation 3's remote play feature. Said feature allows video on a PS3 to be viewed on a PSP remotely via the handheld's Wi-Fi functionality. Turns out, there was a good reason for this. According to today's Journal, Sony is shutting Connect down--and replacing it with something brand new. Citing "people familiar with the situation," the article says that Sony is readying a video download service for both the PSP and PS3 modeled on Apple's iTunes. It also says that Stringer "quietly" decided to shut down Connect in May as party of a strategy to redirect efforts toward video downloads across Sony's various divisions. The article outlines the potential of the video download market, which analyst group Parks Associates estimates will reach $8 billion by 2010. But although the Journal makes much of how the iPod has supplanted Sony's Walkman as the personal audio player of choice, it curiously omits any mention of Microsoft's video offerings on Xbox Live Marketplace. The official story: "We don't have anything specific to announce right now regarding a download service, but as a division of Sony you can expect that we are in talks with all the entertainment companies, including our own, to bring a wide variety of content to the PS Network."--Sony rep. Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus...and fairly obvious. As the proud owner of MGM's massive film library and successful movie and TV studios, Sony has a gigantic pool of exclusive video content which it can sell via the PS3 and PSP. Plus, coupled with the PVR functionalities announced in Leipzig last month, dowloads could make the PS3 a home video powerhouse. Link...

SCi in takeover talks

Eidos parent announces it is in "extremely preliminary" discussions toward an offer, does not name interested party. London-based SCi Entertainment has confirmed that it is currently in talks with an unnamed company in anticipation of a possible buyout offer. Under British law, publicly listed companies are required to make it known if a company or person becomes involved in a takeover bid, although the statement hastened to explain that the deal was at an "extremely preliminary" stage, and there was no guarantee it would go ahead. The company statement reads, "Following the recent speculation in the press, the board of SCi Entertainment Group confirms that it has received an approach and as a result has entered into extremely preliminary discussions regarding a possible offer for the Company. No proposal has been received at this time, however, and there can be no certainty that any offer for the Company will be made or as to the terms of any such offer were one to be made." SCi Games was founded in 1988 by Jane Cavanagh, who this year received an OBE for her services to the video games industry, and in May 2005 acquired Eidos Interactive, developers of the Tomb Raider franchise, along with the Hitman and Championship Manager series. Financial sites were a-chatter with speculation as to whom the mystery company currently in talks with SCi could be--some were guessing Electronic Arts, while others speculated it could be Warner Bros. Entertainment. Warner Bros. acquired 10 percent of SCi's shares back in December, and at the same time gave Eidos the rights to make games based on Warner IP including The Flintstones, Looney Tunes, and The OC. The company stated that a further announcement with more details will follow in due course. Link...

Master P, Seth Green developing hip-hop RPG

No, that headline is not a misprint. Today's Hollywood Reporter contains a story about one of the oddest projects in show business history. The trade reports that onetime music mogul Master P, who has recently focused on real estate, and actor Seth Green, costar of the Austin Powers films and cocreator of TV show Robot Chicken, are codeveloping a game. Titled Play the Industry, the game is being developed by Stoopid Monkey Productions and ShadowMachine Films, the TV production companies behind the Cartoon Network series Robot Chicken and Moral Orel. The two will partner with P Miller Enterprises, the investment company Master P set up to fund his various nonmusic ventures, which include real estate holdings, a fast food franchise, a sports management firm, and a phone sex line. Master P--real name Percy Miller--has also been giving wealth creation seminars at the Learning Annex. As for the game itself, Play the Industry will be a hip-hop-themed role-playing game that will see players earn fame and fortune as a musician, professional athlete, or "power broker." "You can play agent, you can play mogul, you play all sorts of different characters," Stoopid Monkey head Matthew Seinrech told the Reporter. Currently, the three companies are pitching Play the Industry to developers. The aim is for it to be on as many platforms as possible, with a release target of 2009. Seinrech said that the far-off release date is a reflection of the three companies' desire to make a quality game. "We really want to take the time and make sure we do this right," Senreich said. "But the good thing we have going into this is we are developing the creative ahead of time, and we're very close to having that up and running." If the Play the Industry is successful, its creators plan to develop a motion picture, reality show, and clothing line based on the game Link...
